About :

  • The postage stamp is but a miniature sheet of the shared values and the special relationship between India and the United Nations. Department of Posts is delighted to release a Commemorative Postage Stamp on 75 years of the United Nations on 23rd October, 2020.
  • Earlier collaborations include stamps released by India on 24th October, 1954 on the occasion of the United Nations Day; on 24th October, 1985 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the United Nations and on 26th June, 1995 to mark 50 years of the United Nations.
  • In the recent past, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) released a set of stamps featuring endangered migratory species, from Gandhinagar, India on 17th February, 2020. A Definitive stamp was released by it on 2nd October, 2019 on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and a stamp on Diwali, the festival of lights, on 19th October, 2018. India Post and the UNPA jointly issued the HeForShe postage stamp to promote gender equality on 8th March, 2016.
  • India and the United Nations have an abiding commitment to multilateralism and dialogue as the key to achieving shared goals and addressing challenges faced by the global community.
  • As an active member of the United Nations, India has made significant contributions to implementing the goals of the UN Charter in peace building and peacekeeping, sustainable development, poverty eradication, environment, climate change, terrorism, disarmament, human rights, health and pandemics, migration, cyber-security, space and frontier technologies like Artificial intelligence and reforms of the United Nations.
  • The Landmark Moments in this relationship include:
    • 1945 India signed the United Nations Charter
    • 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted by India
    • 1950 India was first elected to serve on the Security Council
    • 1973 India signed the Biological Weapons Convention
    • 1980 India signed the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women
    • 1993 India signed the Chemical Weapons Convention
    • 2000 India signed the Millennium Declaration
    • 2007 2nd October, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi declared the International Day of Non Violence
    • 2014 21st June declared the International Day of Yoga
    • 2015 India adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals
    • 2015 India signed the Paris Agreement on global warming
  • The words Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam, “the whole world is a family”, have often reverberated in the hall of the United Nations. In the raging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, India upheld this principle by supplying essential medicines to more than 150 countries. As the largest vaccine producing nation of the world, India committed itself at the 75th UN General Assembly in September, 2020 to help all humanity in fighting the crisis.
  • An anniversary is as much a time to look back as to move forward. As a country representing 18% of the world population which nurtures hundreds of languages and dialects, many sects and ideologies and is a leading economy, India is in particular a proponent of reform in the United Nations.
